5Mega Camera on upcoming iPhone

Shreds of evidence are beginning to help complete the puzzle of what the next iPhone may offer when its introduced, most likely, next summer atApple's annual Worldwide Developer's Conference. According to Eric Zeman of InformationWeek, the iPhone may soon boast a 5 mexapixel camera to help beef up the device's photographic potential in the wake of heated competition from other smartphones that now pack a powerful lens.

Quote: The current supplier of camera chips for Apple's iPhone, OmniVision Technologies, says it got a whopper of an order from Apple for 2010. Not only will it supply Apple with 40 to 45 million imaging sensors, they will rate 5 megapixels. Although few are surprised by the sensible decision by Apple to step up the iPhone's camera a notch, many (myself included) are somewhat stunned by the bulk in which Cupertino is buying the necessary parts to make it happen.

OmniVision, for example, only supplied Apple with approximately twenty million 3.2 megapixel cameras for the previous update. Reports of 40 to 45 million 5 megapixel cameras are certainly raising eyebrows, particularly with regard to how optimistic Apple may be about a camera upgrade inspiring so many new sales.

Of course, if Apple expands its relationship to new carriers, like Verizon, then perhaps a bump up in sales would materialize - not that I'm trying to fuel any speculation, of course. [Photo] Then again, Apple may have other plans and new devices lined up for use with the 5 megapixel cameras. If reports of such large supplies are, indeed, valid, it's a safe bet thatApple has bigger plans (or at least expectations) than we realize.

Quote: Apple clearly thinks that whatever it cooks up for 2010 is going to be a huge seller. Starting with a 5 megapixel camera certainly won't hurt Apple's chances, but more mega pixels don't necessarily make for better images. Although there will naturally be some excitement surrounding a 5 mixapixel camera, Apple would ultimately provide a much more appreciated service to current and prospective iPhone owners by investing in some optics that can surpass what OmniVision has been able to provide thus far.

Beware of Fake iPhone

If you’re looking to get an iPhone as a gift for a friend or loved one, you’ve probably come across some very realistic fakes if you’ve been looking online at all, particularly if you’ve visited eBay or other online retailers. How do you make sure that you get a real iPhone out of all of the impostors out there? Well, that’s what this installment in our Learning iPhone series is here to help you with!

Know Thy iPhone

First, let’s cover a few basic facts about the iPhone that should help you eliminate the questionable devices from your shopping list.

There have been 3 iPhone models made by Apple to date:

  • The first-generation iPhone, also referred to as the 2G iPhone (where 2G refers to the cellular network technology it uses, also known as EDGE, and not its version) came in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities. It first became available in the U.S. in June 2007 and was replaced by the iPhone 3G in July 2008. It’s most distinguishable physical characteristic compared to later models is its back cover, which is mostly brushed aluminum with a matte black plastic portion at the bottom. It has a 2-megapixel camera with a fixed-focus lens and cannot record video or send MMS messages.
  • The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 and is available in 8GB and 16GB capacities. The 16GB versions are available in two colors – white and black – while the 8GB version is available only in black. The iPhone 3G’s casing is all plastic, unlike the partially-aluminum casing of the first-generation iPhone. The 3G designation refers to the cellular network technology it uses, allowing it connect to networks that offer faster data connection speeds with more bandwidth. It also has a 2-megapixel camera with a fixed-focus lens and cannot record video, though it can send and receive MMS messages.
  • The iPhone 3GS was released in July 2009 and is available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. This time around, both capacities are available in black or white and it looks nearly identical to the preceding iPhone 3G model – the only outward physical difference is the lettering on the back that has a glossy chrome finish compared to the flat white lettering on the iPhone 3G. The ‘S’ designation stands for ‘Speed’ and does not denote anything special about its cellular network capability. It has a 3-megapixel camera with an auto-focus lens and it can record video and send and receive MMS messages, and it has a internal digital compass not found in previous models.

A few more facts:

  • All iPhone models have capacitive touchscreens – these screens react only to materials that can conduct electricity, such as your finger. A stylus made of plastic or metal will not work with them.
  • None of the iPhone models have an expansion card slot that will accommodate a microSD or other type of card to increase its storage capacity.
  • All iPhone models have both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios.
  • None of the iPhone models have an FM radio built in (technically, a tear-down of the iPhone 3GS by iSuppli shows that it has a chip with FM radio capabilities, but it is not active).
  • The battery in all iPhone models is not user-replaceable.
  • All iPhone models only have one SIM card slot.
  • None of the iPhone models come in red, blue, yellow, or any other color aside from black or white (iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS only).

Eye on the Prize

So, now you know the basics about all of the iPhone models, you know what to look out for. If you see any product descriptions or hear claims from sellers that the iPhones they’re selling have two SIM card slots and a 5-megapixel camera, you know they’re not real. Look carefully at the listed specs for the iPhone you’re considering and ensure it’s in line with what’s described above. You can also compare it to Apple’s official spec sheet here.

Still not convinced it’s real? If you can’t inspect it physically yourself, ask for the iPhone’s serial number - it’s printed on the iPhone’s box on the bottom label and is visible in Settings/General/About on the iPhone itself. You can go to Apple’s site here and enter the serial number to see if it’s valid - if so, you’ll be shown its model name and warranty status.

If the seller won’t give you the serial number or provide other proof (a purchase receipt from an authorized iPhone reseller) that it’s a real iPhone, you should move on and find another place to buy one.

Caveat Emptor

Many of the iPhone fakes out there look very convincing - enough so that the packaging and even the device itself may fool those who know what a real iPhone looks like very well. From what we’ve seen, it’s the phone’s software that will be the ultimate indicator. The iPhone’s operating system is proprietary and is not licensed to any other manufacturer and Apple put a lot of effort into every detail of its interface. An iPhone clone will not look as uniform and consistent throughout and will almost undoubtedly be less intuitive. Check out this video by MacMedics for a demonstration of a fake iPhone that looks a lot like a real one on the outside but its software clearly gives it away as a fake (in addition to the strange accessories it comes with):

A fake iPhone will not be recognized by iTunes on your computer as an iPhone and none of the apps available on the App Store will work on it.

Of course, your best bet is to go ahead and buy an iPhone directly from an official carrier or Apple store. To get to a list of where an iPhone can be purchased in your country, go to this page on Apple’s site.

iPhone 4G coming 2010??

Recent hints of an upcoming new iPhone model got a boost today thanks to a terse and enigmatic Tweet from a popular mobile-phone blogger, saying only:

Rumors have been circulating for the past few months about a fourth-generation iPhone being launched in 2010. Just a few weeks ago, an iPhone carrying the hardware designation "3,1" was spotted on the San Francisco Bay Area transit system. An order placed today would result in manufacturing being ramped up on schedule for an early-summer 2010 launch of the device. If this took place, it would fit perfectly into Apple's history of product launches: the original iPhone was released on June 29th of 2007, with the 3G coming on July 11, 2008 and the 3GS on June 19, 2009. References to an "iPhone3,1" were first discovered in iPhone firmware files back in August, and Apple had similarly begun testing the iPhone 3GS (iPhone2,1) in October of 2008, about 8 months ahead of its launch.

The report comes from Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin, the Russian blogger who has had a good history of scoops on new mobile devices. He has, however, no track record when it comes to Apple phones, so it's hard to know how much credibility to place in this report. Murtazin followed up his brief Tweet with another, in reply to a follower, that asserted that the new hardware would support multitasking, further bolstering rumors that the 4G iPhone would be based on a PA Semi processor.

Following the report, the rumor mill churned with speculation about the new phone. A front-facing camera (for video calls) was a popular idea, along with a 1GHz processor, LTE support and a higher resolution display, possibly OLED... even a hardware QWERTY keyboard. Obviously, at this point, nothing is known and little can be inferred to this sketchy assertion.

Foxconn is the trade name of the Taiwan based firm Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Ltd.). They are the largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components worldwide, and mainly manufactures on contract to other companies.

Video Calling on iPhone with Fring

Fring is a VoIP and chat client for your mobile phone. The service works with a handful of various networks, including Skype, AIM, MSN Messenger and Twitter. You can even make calls to landlines from your SkypeOut and SkypeIn account and place voice calls to your Skype and Fring address book.

Today, Fring is taking its iPhone app to the next level by bringing support for video chat. Nokia added this feature to some of its devices last week, and the new version of Fring is now in the app store. Fring is free and you can grab it here (iTunes link). That means the iPhone/iPod Touch can now accept incoming Skype Video Calls! This can lead to a bunch of ways to monitor something as well.

Below is a video by Fring demonstrating the service. Although, all I see is a bunch of greenscreen work and simple screen tracking, but I would imagine it's pretty close to the real deal.

Fring is unfortunately limited to WiFi only, but the workaround is of course to use 3G Unrestrictor on a jailbroken iPhone. Using this tweak you can make Skype calls over 3G, and call unlimited to Canada/USA for $3/month. And of course a bunch of other things 3G Unrestrictor will let you do

One should also note that this is only one-way video calling at the time. Fring has also said that once there is a front-facing camera, they will make two-way video conversations available — just like they are on some Nokia devices.

NoCyfesh Toggle for SBSettings

One of the biggest pet peeves I have with Cydia is the constant refreshing that takes place. Not only does the app want to refresh after opening, it seems to also want to do a full refresh every time you add a source, or install a new app.

On my 3G, I probably spend over a minute just waiting to launch Cydia for the first time. Let alone the additional wait time if I am adding a source or new app.

Now, I'm sure this auto-refreshing is there for a good reason. However, sometimes It's just not necessary to do a full refresh. Until now, I had always wished there was a way to toggle this on and off.

Well now there is. iSpazio has released a toggle for SBSettings that will enable or disable the Auto-Refreshing performed in Cydia. This speeds up Cydia ten fold.

I anticipate lots of these little things will be address in the newest cydia update by @saurik, but in the meantime, those who want a little speed boost will take full advantage of this toggle.

Another win for the Jailbreak community!

This app is available in Cydia at the iSpazio repository.

iPhone can now speak baby language

I don't have any way of testing this myself, but it's not April 1 so I'm going to assume it's legit.

Wired Gadget Lab today put up a feature on Biloop Technologic's "Cry Translator" app, which supposedly listens to the pitch, volume, tone and inflection of a child's cries and analyzes it to determine if the child is in one of five states: hungry, sleepy, stressed, annoyed or bored.

The app seems ready-made for ridicule (really? you need "an app for that?" really? consider a dog instead), though Wired makes a reasonable point: the app is of value to both new parents and caregivers - like babysitters - who haven't had experience in interpreting the cries of an infant.

The developer, Biloop Technologic, claims that clinical tests have proven the app to be accurate 96% of the time. A spokesperson, Lori McKnight, said that the sounds a baby makes are innate to the human, and thus transcend the parents' nationality or language.
Quote:
There are five distinct cries that have common frequency patterns, regardless of culture or language. A mother learns these over time, but this can help speed up the learning curve, and also help dads and caregivers.
The app is available on iTunes for $29.99 and I would love to hear if anyone with kid-access and $30 to spare (two conditions which seldom both obtain simultaneously) has any experience with this.

Some Tips on how to Increase battery Life

The iPhone is great device that can do so much for you – beyond just being a cell phone, it can be your dedicated iPod and gaming device as well as your PDA and all-around communicator to handle text messaging, e-mail, and instant messaging. Given this, the chances you’ll end up using it a lot throughout the day can be pretty high, and unless you’re constantly near a power source and can charge its battery, your iPhone may run out of juice before the day is over. This installment in our Learning iPhone series will give you some tips on how to increase your iPhone’s battery life.

Some of the battery maximization tips we’ll talk about are pretty extreme in that they could hamper how you typically use your iPhone, while others are minor and may not even be noticeable to you. We’ll categorize our tips along this continuum.

Mostly unnoticeable

Screen brightness

The iPhone’s default screen brightness out of the box is right at the 50% mark. If you haven’t touched it since you first got your iPhone, this could be a good area in which to start since it takes more power to keep the screen bright. Move that slider marker to the left to decrease the brightness to a tolerable level.

Switching the Auto-Brightness setting to on can also help save battery life, contrary to what you may think. This controls an ambient light sensor on the face of the iPhone under the screen to the left of the earpiece speaker on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G models. When the sensor detects a lot of ambient light, it will turn the screen’s backlight up (to the maximum you set using the slider bar) to ensure you can read it in brighter lighting. When the sensor detects less ambient light, it will turn the screen’s backlight down so you’re not staring into a bright light when you’re in the dark. Powering the sensor takes less energy than powering a backlight on a higher brightness level, so it can help you improve battery life.

Location Services

If you spend most of your time in the same places – home, school, or work – and don’t need your iPhone to know where it is all the time via its GPS chip, turning off Location Services can help conserve juice. This switch is in the Settings/General menu and it will switch off the iPhone’s GPS chip. One less thing to power equals more battery life!

The downside to turning Location Services to off is that any app you open that uses the GPS chip will always give you an error message once it tries to find the iPhone’s current location. If you don’t use apps like this often, it probably won’t be a big deal to you. If you do, this may be one of the battery-saving techniques you skip.

Wi-Fi vs. 3G

If you have a Wi-Fi network at home, school or work, make sure your iPhone is set up to connect to it automatically. Browsing the web or any other activity that requires internet connectivity will go both faster and consume less power over Wi-Fi than over a 3G network. The iPhone’s 3G radio consumes a lot of power to connect to a local cell tower and send and receive data - more so than the Wi-Fi radio does.

Volume

Like to listen to music on your iPhone? If you do, keeping the volume down will go a long way to preserving your battery life. It takes less power to put out music at a lower volume than it does at a higher volume, particularly if you’re using high-end 3rd-party headphones with high impedance (the higher the impedance rating for a pair of headphones, the more energy it takes to power them).

Even adjusting the ringtone volume can have an effect, albeit a limited one unless your iPhone is ringing with incoming calls constantly.

Noticeable

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

If you only use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in certain situations, such as connecting to a home Wi-Fi network or using a Bluetooth headset only while you’re driving, you can turn off the iPhone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios when they’re not in use, which will conserve the battery. The trick is that you’ll need to remember when to turn them back on when you need them. Depending on how good you are at this, it could be a mild nuisance to a full-blown annoyance if you’re doing something like making a call using your Bluetooth headset and then realize your iPhone won’t connect to it after you’re already traveling 75 mph on the expressway.

Fetch/Push vs. Manual

Instead of setting your iPhone to check for new emails on a fixed schedule or via Push if you have a push-enabled email account, check for new email manually. This will prevent your iPhone from making a connection to the internet/server on its own throughout the day. Checking for email manually lets you determine when you want this extra power expenditure to occur, and the less frequently you do it, the longer your battery will last. Of course, this can be very inconvenient if you use your iPhone a lot during the day to keep tabs on your work or personal email and you prefer to be notified of new messages as soon as they arrive.

Potentially annoying but highly effective

3G vs. EDGE

This tip is a little extreme since you probably want to get the most out of your data plan, particularly since you can be paying $30 or more for it per month depending on your carrier. Those of you who upgraded from a first-generation iPhone in the U.S. may feel this way the most since AT&T hit you with a $10 increase in the monthly data plan cost when you moved to the iPhone 3G/3GS. However, as we mentioned before, 3G radios consume a lot of power to connect to towers and send and receive data and turning off 3G on your iPhone can make a big difference in battery life. If you forget to turn it back on, you’ll suffer through EDGE network speeds that will slow your internet browsing to a crawl. Fortunately, turning it back on is easy enough through a virtual switch, but turning it on and off throughout the day could get wearisome.

Airplane Mode

This is probably the most extreme suggestion we have, but it can work wonders for your battery life. It’s most painless when you’re in an area where you’re not supposed to be using a cell phone to begin with, such as on a plane. But, if you rely on your iPhone as your main method of communication while you’re out and about to make and receive calls and check email, this suggestion could be a no-go for you from the start. However, if you’re going to be in an area where there’s spotty network coverage or will be going to sleep and don’t want to be disturbed anyway, Airplane Mode can be a life saver when there’s no power outlet nearby.

NASA contribution in iPhone Apps

A NASA scientist has come up with a working prototype of chemical-sniffing circuitry as a test of technology that could one day become standard equipment on cell phones in the US. The sensing device attaches to the bottom of an iPhone and uses the data connection to collect, process and report the results.

Jing Li, a physical scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in California developed this prototype as a proof of concept of new technology that would bring compact, low-cost, low-power, high-speed nanosensor-based chemical sensing capabilities to cell phones. Li worked with other researchers under a grant from the "Cell-All" program of the US Department of Homeland Security to develop tools that would better enable the government to quickly respond in case of a chemical release or terror attack.

The circuitry the team came up with is about the size of a postage stamp and plugs into an iPhone's dock port. It's able to detect and identify low concentrations of ammonia, chlorine gas and methane using something called a "sample jet" and a multiple-channel silicon-based sensing chip, which consists of 16 nanosensors. The phone processes the data, stores it, and can send detection data to another phone or a computer using either the 3G or WiFi data network.

The Cell-All program "is designed to provide greater detection capabilities in areas where people congregate," according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate.
Quote:
The concept allows for chemical agent detectors to ultimately be everywhere where there are cellular telephones. At the option of the cell phone owner, the GPS in the phone could provide sensor location information to emergency operation centers.
While the technology is years away from widespread implementation, it's another indication that cell phones are spreading the ubiquity of surveillance tools. Along with the ability to remotely turn on a cell's microphone without the user being aware, any future sensing tools built into mobile phones offer both powerful tools for law enforcement, and potential dangers to privacy.

Apple in a lead in Handset Market

Apple, Inc. overtook Nokia in the September quarter as the cellphone maker generating the highest total operating profit in the industry, according to a report by research firm Strategy Analytics. The Finnish handset maker is still the world's largest by volume. Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones during the July-September quarter, generating sales of $4.5 billion. Nokia sold 108.5 million phones in total in the same quarter, with sales of €6.9 billion ($10.36 billion). When measured by profits, however, Nokia lost in the third quarter against Apple. While Apple does not release profits for its specific product lines, Strategy Analytics estimated Apple's profit on the iPhone at $1.6 billion in the third quarter, compared with Nokia's $1.1 billion. Analyst Alex Spector said:
Quote:
With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years. Nokia
sued Apple in October for patent infringement, accusing Apple of “attempting to get a free ride” off Nokia’s research on GSM, 3G and WiFi technologies. Apple said it will “vigorously defend” against the lawsuit. However, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said that Apple could end up paying $6 to $12 of royalties per iPhone.

Malware Warning to Jailbroken iPhone Users

Well, we all knew this was coming.

The Macintosh security firm Intego reports that they have identified malware that will allow hackers to access data on jailbroken iPhones running OpenSSH with the default root password 'alpine.' Unjailbroken iPhones, devices not running sshd, and devices with unique root passwords are not vulnerable to this exploit. Though Intego currently categorizes the risk of the malware as "low," users should act to secure their phones.

The tool - which Intego identifies as "iPhone/Privacy.A" - works by being installed onto a "Mac, PC, Unix or Linux" computer - or another iPhone - and then scanning the computer's network to find ssh services.

Quote:
This hacker tool could easily be installed, for example, on a computer on display in a retail store, which could then scan all iPhones that pass within the reach of its network. Or, a hacker could sit in an Internet café and let his computer scan all iPhones that come within the range of the wifi network in search of data. Hackers could even install this tool on their own iPhones, and use it to scan for jailbroken phones as they go about their daily business.

When a vulnerable iPhone is found, the hacker can then download all personal data stored on the device: "e-mail, contacts, SMSs, calendars, photos, music files, videos, as well as any data recorded by any iPhone app."

Intego recommends its own VirusBarrier X5 software to identify and eradicate the software on a Mac, but notes there is no detection tool for other computer platforms, or for the iPhone itself. Users of jailbroken phones should not enable ssh except when needed, and should change their root passwords:
install and run "Mobile Terminal"
type su root at the shell prompt and tap enter
type passwd and tap enter

Apple putting foot on gas against Jailbreaking

Apple is officially in the market for a new top cop on their jailbreak police force. With the booming business that is jailbreaking only growing bigger by the day, Apple is planning to seriously crack down on the ease with which hackers exploit the iPhone platform and modify their devices' operating systems. And Apple isn't making any secret of its intentions. In fact, a new position is posted for all to see on the company's website. They are hoping in the very near future to fill the position of "iPhone OS Platform Security Manager" - aka, a jailbreak cop.Apple Insider reports that "The company is looking for someone to oversee its team which ensures secure booting and installation of the iPhone OS and protecting and hardening it against outside threats."
Quote:
It's not clear whether the position is new, or if Apple is looking to replace someone on an existing team. The Santa Clara Valley job was posted on Oct. 16, 2009. It seems plausible that this is an entirely new position altogether at the company, as Apple is likely surprised with how easily and readily the iPhone is being jailbroken by more users than they can possibly imagine. Consequently, the obvious purpose of this position is to invent and erect as many barriers to jailbreaking as possible.Sounds like Apple is really going to war with jailbreakers this time.
Quote:
It has been a long back-and-forth battle between Apple and hackers since the iPhone debuted in 2007. While those working to crack the phone have, until now, been able to maintain their ability to run unauthorized code, Apple, at the moment, appears to have the upper hand. The most recently updated iPhone 3GS, released mid-cycle in October, requires what is known as a "tethered jailbreak," meaning that the iPhone must be attached to a
computer via USB and have a hack applied each time it is restarted.

Dutch Jailbroken iPhone

A Dutch hacker gained access to a number of jailbroken iPhones that were running ssh with root passwords set to default, and demanded €5 to restore them. He's since returned the money, but the incident highlights a common security issue with jailbroken phones.

It seems likely that the hacker portscanned for ssh on the T-mobile Netherlands network in order to find jailbroken iPhones with SSH running. He then changed their wallpaper to a graphic that mimics an SMS message, reading: "Your iPhone's been hacked because it's really insecure! Please visit doiop.com/iHacked and secure your iPhone right now! Right now, I can access all your files." The website contains a link to a PayPal account, and users were told to send him €5 for instructions on how to regain access to their phones. He also left the following message:

Quote:
"If you don't pay, it's fine by me. But remember, the way I got access to your iPhone can be used by thousands of others—they can send text messages from your number (like I did), use it to call or record your calls, and actually whatever they want, even use it for their hacking activities! I can assure you, I have no intention of harming you or whatever, but, some hackers do! It's just my advice to secure your phone."

He subsequently apologized for asking for the money, and posted the restore instructions on his website.

The exploit is not a complicated one, and a commenter to Ars Technica noted that security researchers have done it in the past, and downloaded users' SMS databases as a "proof of concept" that the security hole exists. A Netherlands-based commenter on tweakers.net provided this pithy explanation that will probably be understandable even by readers who speak no Dutch.

A concern that I have involves problems users have noted after changing their root passwords using the passwd utility, as the Dutch hacker directs his "victims" to do. Users have reported that after changing the password using that method and rebooting, an "Edit home screen" message appears and Springboard crashes, entering a loop and rendering the device unusable. The phone then has to be restored.

Has anyone had success with changing passwords using passwd... and if not, did the reported workaround solve the issue?

Jailbreak iPhone 3G/3GS using blackra1n (Windows)

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone and iPod touch using BlackRa1n for Windows. The BlackRa1n jailbreak will work with the latest 3.1.2 firmware; however, it will not hacktivate your iPhone. This means that if you are not on an official Apple approved carrier BlackRa1n cannot activate it.For those with the new iPod touch, BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.WARNING: Even though the GeoHot jailbreak supports 3.1.2 do not update if you are on iPhone OS 3.0.1 or 3.0. You will lose your unlock. Use PwnageTool to safely update to 3.1 without performing a baseband update. If you really must have 3.1.2 then wait for the next version of PwnageTool. If you have already updated to 3.1 or 3.1.2 without using PwnageTool then you've lost the ability to unlock for the time being. You can now use BlackRa1n to at least regain your jailbreak :)Ok lets begin...

Step One
Open your web browser of choice and navigate to http://www.blackra1n.com. Click the Windows logo at the bottom of the screen.

Step Two
When prompted save the download to your desktop

Step Three
Then double click the blackra1n executable file from the desktop to launch the program

Step Four
Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click the large make it ra1n button

Step Five
You iPhone will now be placed in recovery mode.

You will see a picture of GeoHot that replaces the regular recovery mode screen on your device.

blackra1n will run and then your device will reboot.

A popup message will appear informing you that BlackRa1n is free software and if you appreciate it you can donate to GeoHot at geohot@gmail.com.

Step Six
Once your device reboots it will be jailbroken and you will notice a blackra1n icon on the desktop. Make sure you have an internet connection and press to launch the application.

Choose the installer application of your choice then press the Install button at the top right of the screen

BlackRa1n will begin to download and install the package you selected.

Step Seven
Once complete BlackRa1n will respring your iPhone and you will find the installer package of your choice on the Springboard.

Step Eight
Once you have confirmed your installer package is working correctly you may use the Uninstall blackra1n button inside the BlackRa1n app to remove it from your springboard.

**THANKS: A big thanks to Geohot for making this jailbreak possible. Also thanks to those who contributed to making it a success.

I am in no way going to legitimize it : Geohot

Geohot has something to say , here is what he said on his blog.

I have an unlock for 05.11.07. I will be releasing on 11/04/09, for $0.00

First off, Jody Sanders, I am declining your $10,000. Why? Because you, and the rest of the iPhone unlock sites out there are scum. You make money selling freeware; that's not cool, and I am in no way going to legitimize it.
Seriously, the people who really lose here are the customers. These sites are full of blatant lies, claiming to have unlocks for 05.11.07 People buy them, and are told the unlock is in development, and the release date is unknown. Imagine you bought a cup of coffee and were told it's in development? Recently, many of these sites sent out e-mails saying they made major breakthroughs and the unlock will be ready 11/04/09. Coincidence that that's the release date of blacksn0w?
I'm not going to post all these scam sites here, as I don't want to give them the pagerank boost. Rather I'll give you a whitelist, two people make unlocks, me and the dev team. Every iPhone unlock site you see out there is selling our stuff, repackaged in some form or another. Same goes for jailbreaks, although ih8sn0w and chronicdev are legit. Notice what all the legit ones have in common? They are free.
Now despite rumors of the ferocity of my legal team, they actually are pretty poor lawyers. And the scum who run these websites are the type who get off on legal battles. So we have to fight them in another way, and I'm asking for everyones help on this. Our weapon is information. Get the truth out, that all iPhone unlocks and jailbreaks are free, and if you are buying something, you aren't getting anything a simple google search couldn't get you, and are probably funding someones crack habit.
This is the first time I have tried to make something simple for the end users, and it enrages me to see people selling it. Let's shut all these assholes down, and tell the iPhone owning world all they need is at blackra1n.com, including blacksn0w instructions on it's release date, 11/04/09(yes, will support hacktivation). You do your part, and I'll do mine making things as simple, reliable, and straightforward as possible.

You have 4 days.

iPhone 4G Rumors

Fire up the old rumor machine, the often discussed Apple Table gained a bit more coverage today.

Firstly, Bell Keller, Executive Editor of the NY Times, dropped a mention of the Apple Tablet into a speech of his. Whether he was referring to advance knowledge, or just the what might be coming, is not known. The speech was from an internal meeting, and was meant to be “off the record”, but was recorded and hosted by Niemen Journalism Lab at Harvard.
The second bit of information comes from Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, rumored hardware provider for the Tablet. The photo below is for a new SIM tray, apparently for use in the iPhone 4G, or the Apple Tablet. It’s a pretty slim piece of information, as there’s nothing concrete linking it to any Apple gear. That’s why it’s a rumor, folks.

In non-recital mode, tapping once on the ayah column (the fast scroll column) will scroll and make the next ayah visible.
